GitLab seeks a Director, Engineering, Platform Operations & Productivity for a full-time, on-site role in India. GitLab provides an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, utilized by millions of registered users and major enterprise organizations to accelerate software delivery and improve security. In this role, you will lead three distinct functions requiring deep technical capability alongside leadership: Git & Gitaly Operations, Nonlinear Productivity, and Platform Staff.
This position is designed for an engineering leader with personal experience building distributed systems who can guide teams through metrics, operational rhythms, and direct technical judgment rather than relying on heroics. You will evaluate designs, establish accountability for reliability and efficiency, and direct a senior, AI-native team through complex operational challenges, system bootstrapping, and production crisis resolution. GitLab maintains a high-performance culture centered on transparency, continuous learning, and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Manage and develop the Manager for Git & Gitaly Operations, maintaining reliability standards across Self-Managed, GitLab Dedicated, and SaaS environments.
- Oversee the Manager for Nonlinear Productivity and drive measurable metric movement in friction elimination and development workflows.
- Directly supervise and coordinate the Platform Staff team, utilizing AI-assisted tools as a standard part of their daily work.
- Evaluate and assign projects for Platform Staff, including bootstrapping new initiatives, addressing unique customer requests, or managing production crises until handoff to permanent teams.
- Review distributed systems designs, friction-elimination fixes, and crisis management plans directly across all three functional areas.
- Establish predictable operating cadences and metrics so teams operate sustainably without relying on unsustainable hours.
Requirements
- Demonstrated hands-on experience personally designing and shipping distributed systems.
- Track record managing engineering operations and incident management at a significant scale.
- Demonstrated history of driving measurable engineering productivity improvements across multiple teams or organizations.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and experience managing multiple managers or functions simultaneously.
- Understanding of GitLab development workflows and platform capabilities.
