Job Description
GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer for the Repository Management team under the Source Code stage. GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by over fifty percent of Fortune 100 companies and tens of millions of registered users to accelerate software delivery and improve operational efficiency.
In this role, you will help users configure repositories confidently by transforming intricate policy and management requirements into robust backend solutions using Ruby and GraphQL. You will build secure guardrails for code management as artificial intelligence agents increasingly author and oversee code alongside human developers. Operating within a foundational and complex product division, you will maintain high system reliability through caching, rate limiting, structured query language tuning, performance monitoring, and resiliency measures. The engineering team consists of six professionals spanning Europe and North America.
GitLab embraces artificial intelligence as a core productivity multiplier and expects all team members to incorporate AI tools into daily workflows. The position supports both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. Candidates with varying levels of experience are welcome to apply, and successful applicants will work alongside experts in Code Review, Gitaly, and other associated teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, performant, and well-tested features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL
- Contribute to backend services, application programming interfaces, business logic, and data models for repository management
- Write maintainable code following internal standards and incorporate feedback from code review
- Monitor production health metrics, handle Tier 2 on-call duties, troubleshoot incidents, and contribute to root cause analysis
- Collaborate asynchronously and synchronously with cross-functional team members and domain experts
- Utilize artificial intelligence coding tools for well-scoped tasks while critically reviewing their output
- Share knowledge through code review, documentation, and everyday collaboration
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces
- Experience using Ruby and GraphQL, or the capability to learn them
- Understanding of relational databases, structured query language, caching, data modeling, background processing, and backend performance tuning
- Experience contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based features in web applications
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, alongside familiarity with Git and collaborative code reviews
- Experience using artificial intelligence coding tools or agents with output review capabilities
- Clear written and verbal English communication skills for an asynchronous work setting
- Ability to manage assigned priorities, take ownership, work through ambiguity, and seek guidance when necessary
