GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps designed to boost developer productivity, enhance operational efficiency, and lower security and compliance risks. The organization seeks an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join the Agent Foundations stage within AI Engineering.
In this position, the professional will focus on creating the underlying infrastructure for agentic AI features, including the core harness known as Duo Developer. Daily duties center on backend Python engineering, utilizing tools such as LangGraph to deliver secure, scalable features within the AI Gateway. The engineer will collaborate closely with product management, user experience, frontend, backend, and AI specialists across multiple teams in a high-visibility environment.
The role suits individuals experienced in building production Python applications who are interested in developing automated agent flows and scalable backend architectures. GitLab maintains an equal opportunity workplace.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and ship features for the Duo Agent Platform across the Duo Workflow Service, AI Gateway, and the GitLab monolith
- Build and enhance agentic flows and reusable components using LangChain and LangGraph
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs and backend logic with clear contracts
- Extend automated testing frameworks such as pytest to evaluate agent behavior
- Share standards and patterns with other engineers to support responsible AI integration
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production problems and improve observability
Requirements
- Experience building and maintaining production Python backend applications including APIs, asynchronous processing, and data models
- Experience with LLM application frameworks like LangGraph or designing AI-powered backend features
- Skill in designing or extending REST, GraphQL, or gRPC APIs focused on scalability and maintainability
- Ability to work across the stack in a mature codebase
- Experience identifying and resolving application performance bottlenecks
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical proposals and documentation
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
