The organization is currently hiring a Backend Engineer to join the Source Code Experience team within the Create stage. In this position, you will help design backend capabilities and interfaces that streamline everyday source code workflows for users across GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated, while facilitating trustworthy collaboration between human developers and artificial intelligence agents.
This role suits professionals with a background in backend web development who are experienced in working with Ruby and GraphQL. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, tackle complex legacy constraints, and maintain system performance through query tuning, caching, and resiliency practices. GitLab operates with a high-performance culture that embraces artificial intelligence as a core productivity tool and encourages continuous knowledge exchange among team members.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, well-tested, and performant features using Ruby and GraphQL
- Design and maintain backend services, business logic, application programming interfaces, and data models for source code workflows
- Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshoot incidents, and improve system observability and resiliency
- Utilize artificial intelligence agents for well-scoped tasks to accelerate delivery without compromising quality
- Contribute to constructive code reviews and share technical knowledge through documentation
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces with Ruby and GraphQL
- Understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests alongside familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review workflows
- Proficiency in clear written and spoken English communication within an asynchronous environment
- Ability to manage assigned priorities, take ownership of work, navigate ambiguity, and seek guidance when necessary
Qualifications
- Experience using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output, or a strong interest in developing these skills within a complex monorepo
