The company is hiring a remote Backend Engineer (Ruby) for the Agent Foundations stage within its AI Engineering team. In this intermediate role, the engineer will help construct the core platform that enables AI agents to function across the entire software delivery lifecycle, bridging GitLab's core platform with its broader artificial intelligence strategy.
This position involves designing and maintaining features for the Duo Agent Platform inside the GitLab Ruby monolith, while collaborating with product managers, user experience designers, and engineering specialists. The ideal professional brings hands-on experience with production Ruby on Rails applications, relational databases, and API development, alongside a strong interest in incorporating AI tools into everyday tasks. Team members operate in a distributed environment across the EMEA and AMER timezones using asynchronous communication methods.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and ship features for the Duo Agent Platform primarily within the Ruby monolith and secondarily in the Python AI Gateway
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST application programming interfaces alongside corresponding backend logic
- Partner with product management, design, frontend, and AI specialists to refine project scopes and deliver improvements in iterative cycles
- Create and expand automated test suites using RSpec and other testing frameworks
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to resolve production incidents, perform root cause analyses, and enhance system observability
- Share engineering standards and evidence-driven practices with colleagues to promote responsible AI integration
Requirements
- Experience building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications, including data models, APIs, and background jobs
- Proficiency in designing and extending REST or GraphQL APIs with an emphasis on scalability and backward compatibility
- Demonstrated hands-on experience utilizing AI tools in daily workflows
- Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query optimization
- Ability to identify and resolve application performance bottlenecks
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and proposals within a distributed team
Qualifications
