This opportunity is for an Intermediate Backend Engineer joining the Agent Foundations stage within GitLab's AI Engineering division. In this position, you will help build the platform that enables AI agents to function across the entire software delivery lifecycle, participating in how agents are created, connected to tools, executed, and observed. You will collaborate closely with product management, user experience professionals, frontend and backend specialists, and AI experts in a high-visibility area bridging the core platform with the AI strategy.
Daily duties involve developing and maintaining features for the Duo Agent Platform within the GitLab Ruby monolith and Python-based AI Gateway. You will design and review GraphQL and REST application programming interfaces, write automated testing using frameworks like RSpec, participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to resolve production issues, and keep abreast of industry competitors.
Ideal candidates bring practical experience with production Ruby on Rails applications, relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and API design, combined with an enthusiasm for artificial intelligence tools. Team members operate across EMEA and AMER timezones using asynchronous communication methods.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and ship features for the Duo Agent Platform utilizing the Ruby monolith and Python AI Gateway
- Partner with cross-functional product, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver iterative improvements
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs alongside backend logic
- Extend and improve automated testing using RSpec and related frameworks
- Share standards and patterns regarding responsible AI integration with other engineers
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production concerns and conduct root cause analysis
- Monitor the competitive landscape to support the platform's positioning
Requirements
- Experience building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications encompassing background jobs, data models, and APIs
- Familiarity working across the stack in a mature codebase
- Proficiency in designing or extending REST and GraphQL APIs focusing on scalability and backward compatibility
- Hands-on experience using AI tools in daily work
- Demonstrated SQL expertise and relational database experience including PostgreSQL query writing and data modeling
- Capability to identify and resolve application performance bottlenecks
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous, cross-functional collaboration
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Python backends
- Familiarity with Vue frontends
