Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform designed for DevSecOps, aiding organizations in accelerating digital transformation, enhancing operational efficiency, minimizing security risks, and boosting developer productivity. The company is hiring a remote Backend Engineer, Source Code: Repository Services (Ruby) on a full-time basis.
In this role, you will design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements while collaborating alongside Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams. The position requires you to write maintainable, observable, and performant code, maintain APIs and background jobs, add automated test coverage, and investigate production issues. GitLab integrates AI into daily engineering workflows as a productivity multiplier, expecting all team members to utilize and validate AI coding tools.
This opportunity is well-suited for engineers with strong backend fundamentals, practical judgment regarding modular boundaries, and the ability to operate independently within a remote, asynchronous organization. You will take ownership of features from initial requirements through delivery and follow-up, backed by tenured engineers who conduct collaborative code and design reviews.
Responsibilities

- Build maintainable, secure, observable, and performant code including APIs, background jobs, integrations, and service functionality
- Work with data models, migrations, indexes, and query behavior
- Add and improve automated test coverage across unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end suites
- Review peer code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk
- Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures at the feature boundary
- Identify technical debt and propose practical improvements
- Incorporate AI productively into daily tasks while validating generated output and understanding its limitations
Requirements
- Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications
- Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals
- Adaptability with Ruby on Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages
- Ability to take features from clarification through delivery and follow-up independently
- Sound instincts regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk
- Strong written communication skills for a remote and asynchronous environment
Qualifications
- Experience with production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment
- Experience with Rust for systems, security, performance, or platform work
- Experience with PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflows
- Experience using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts for observability
- Experience contributing to a modular monolith, bounded context, shared component, or independently operated service
- Practical experience with AI coding tools
