The organization is seeking a Coding Consultant Outpatient to join its remote team on a PRN basis. This position features a flexible schedule and allows professionals to work directly from their own workspace. The ideal candidate possesses a strong attention to detail, a thorough understanding of medical terminology, and the capability to handle a high volume of complex decisions.
In this role, the consultant will review medical documentation, assign precise diagnostic and procedural codes, and determine accurate discharge dispositions. Responsibilities also include abstracting data for reporting needs, meeting accuracy and productivity standards, and communicating documentation improvements to the appropriate personnel. Candidates must maintain active credentials, track continuing education credits, and comply with all internal policies and the American Health Information Management Association code of ethics. Some clients may require post-offer health screenings and specific vaccinations, though exemption requests are reviewed by human resources on a case-by-case basis.
Responsibilities
- Examine medical documentation and assign precise codes for procedures and diagnoses
- Properly sequence codes according to medical records
- Determine and assign appropriate discharge dispositions
- Abstract and input coded information to fulfill hospital reporting and statistical requirements
- Report coding issues and documentation improvement opportunities to designated personnel
- Maintain a 95 percent accuracy rate for coding and APC assignments while meeting productivity benchmarks
- Track continuing education units to preserve professional credentials
- Participate in company-sponsored education meetings and in-services
- Communicate effectively with peers, leadership, and hospital personnel about reimbursement and clinical matters
- Adhere strictly to the American Health Information Management Association code of ethics and division policies
- Take and pass annual introductory HIPAA examinations along with other assigned tests
Requirements
- At least 2 years of coding experience in a coding consulting role or a hospital setting
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience dealing with hospital billing claim edits
- Proficiency in coding specialties such as Same Day Surgery, Observation, Emergency Department, Ancillary, Injections, Infusions, and E/M leveling
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with exceptional time management abilities
- Familiarity with computerized encoding and abstracting software
- Adeptness at working in a remote environment
Qualifications
- Possession of AHIMA certified credentials including RHIA, RHIT, or CCS
- Possession of AAPC certified credentials including CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, or CRC
- Prior experience working with Parallon, Cerner, and Optum
- Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite, with a primary focus on Excel
