Ashby is expanding its specialized Design Engineering department, aiming to grow the team from five to over ten members. This position is built for individuals who excel at both visual design and technical coding, operating within a formal team that reports to the Co-Founder and VP of Engineering.
The company develops talent acquisition software that provides advanced analytics, workflow automation, and customizable tooling for recruitment and HR teams. Serving over 100,000 weekly active users and millions of weekly candidates, Ashby counts prominent organizations like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake among its customers.
Design Engineers at Ashby handle complex user interface and user experience hurdles, enhance the company's internal design system, and assist product engineers with bespoke visual work. Rather than relying on rigid product development processes, engineers at Ashby take complete ownership of their projects, from researching problems and building wireframes to writing specs and implementing end-to-end solutions. The engineering environment emphasizes rapid iteration, shipping code quickly, and gathering user feedback directly from customers and internal teams.
This role is not suited for candidates who wish to work exclusively on design systems, prefer lengthy upfront user research before building, or require heavy company-driven structure and sprint planning to finish projects.
Responsibilities
- Tackle the most complex design challenges across the product
- Expand and enhance the internal design system to help others improve their layouts
- Consult on bespoke design needs requested by Product Engineers
- Conduct user research through customer conversations, wireframe new flows, and implement polished user interfaces
- Build flexible, composable components within the design system for consistent setup wizards
Requirements
- At least two years of continuous experience working as an engineer or a designer
- Good proficiency in both design and engineering, accompanied by exceptional proficiency in your primary full-time discipline
- Experience designing products and shipping functional code to hundreds of users
- Strong taste and execution in visual design
Qualifications
- Experience making major contributions to a design system
- Background in both engineering and design disciplines
