Job Description
Canonical has put together a Developer Relations group to engage with open-source communities and organisations centred on developers. A Developer Relations Engineer is part technical specialist, part strategist, part communicator, and feels real empathy for developers. The work flows both ways: presenting Canonical's direction and products to the community, and bringing community views back into product planning. The role is remote, and the posting says the first members of the group are being hired to cover European, Middle Eastern, African and American time zones.
In a typical week, the engineer might sit in on product meetings that range from high-level strategy to day-to-day development progress, adding expertise. Community conversations take place across chat platforms, social networks, product forums and local meetups. The engineer also works with other Canonical groups to keep methods consistent, tackles technical problems raised by users or staff, and refines technical documentation. Producing articles, slide decks and hands-on workshops, finding ways to make the developer experience better, and speaking at conferences and technical gatherings are further duties.
The ideal candidate is a programmer with genuine enthusiasm for open-source software, real-world experience building and shipping Linux software, and hands-on familiarity with packaging formats such as Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP and containers. Contributions to open-source projects, communities or documentation are expected, along with an engaging presentation style and tact when interests diverge. Global travel twice a year, including upstream and partner events, is part of the package.
