Job Description
GitLab provides an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps that aids organizations in boosting developer productivity, enhancing operational efficiency, minimizing security and compliance risk, and speeding up digital transformation. Over 50 million registered users and more than half of the Fortune 100 rely on GitLab to deliver safer software more rapidly. The organization seeks a Distinguished Engineer for its Core DevOps division to guide technical strategy across continuous integration, continuous deployment, planning, and source control features.
In this position, the professional will collaborate closely with the Vice President of Engineering, shaping technical investments, defining metrics for success such as latency and availability, and tackling system risks. The chosen individual will handle complex design problems directly by coding prototypes, streamlining shared components, and establishing upgrade paths that prevent disruption for millions of active users. The role involves guiding Staff and Principal engineers, embedding AI-driven capabilities into workflows, and joining the incident management on-call schedule.
Responsibilities
- Shape and update the technical trajectory for continuous integration, continuous deployment, planning, and source code features.
- Partner with the Vice President of Engineering on planning and technical investments.
- Translate company goals regarding productivity, quality, and AI-native engineering into actionable technical roadmaps.
- Establish measurable standards for service availability, latency, pipeline success, test reliability, and defect escape rates.
- Identify and eliminate systemic technical risks across the group.
- Author code, prototypes, and proofs of concept for challenging design tasks.
- Design migration paths to update long-lived systems without impacting active users.
- Participate in the incident management on-call rotation.
Requirements
- Have at least 10 years of software engineering experience.
- Bring a minimum of 4 years of background in a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership position.
- Possess deep expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, large language models, agentic frameworks, and autonomous workflows.
- Demonstrate hands-on technical experimentation skills, including creating evaluation frameworks and running benchmarks.
- Show a strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems involving service decomposition and fault tolerance.
- Bring experience designing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices.
- Exhibit experience mentoring senior engineers and guiding technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
