Job Description
Supabase is seeking an Edge Functions Engineer to join its globally distributed, remote team. The company offers a Postgres development platform with integrated solutions including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. In this role, the successful candidate will help advance the capability of running server-side TypeScript functions globally at the edge.
The position involves working on the open-source, Rust-based Supabase Edge Runtime, optimizing latency and reliability, participating in on-call rotations, and expanding feature sets such as background tasks and WebSockets streaming. The ideal engineer possesses strong backend or systems engineering experience and a vision for edge computing.
Responsibilities
- Develop and evolve the Supabase Edge Runtime, including host management and resource limit enforcement
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and OpenTelemetry tracing to enhance service latency and reliability
- Collaborate with Deno and other open-source teams while relaying user requirements
- Take part in an on-call rotation to ensure production health for Edge Functions
- Manage and improve features like scheduled tasks, background operations, WebSockets streaming, and ephemeral file storage
- Integrate functions tightly with Postgres, Auth, Storage, and Realtime
- Expand function capabilities to support AI inference, MCP servers, simple website hosting, and URL shorteners
- Enhance local development and debugging experiences through the Supabase CLI, DevTools, and logging
Requirements
- At least 5 years of backend or systems engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in Rust and TypeScript
- Familiarity with V8 Isolates, Deno, and general JavaScript runtimes
- Experience operating infrastructure at scale with systems like Kubernetes, AWS, Cloudflare Workers, or Redis
Qualifications
- Experience building developer-facing command line interfaces or front-end tooling for infrastructure products
