Job Description
GitLab operates as an intelligent DevSecOps orchestration platform, serving over 50 million registered users and more than half of the Fortune 100 companies. The organization is seeking an Engineering Manager, Build to guide the Build team within GitLab Delivery on a remote basis. In this position, the individual will oversee the operational excellence, execution, and strategy behind systems that convert GitLab source code into secure, verified, and distributable artifacts for Self-Managed users and additional delivery targets. This role is well-suited for engineering leaders with a background in large-scale distributed services who are comfortable steering distributed, remote teams without a dedicated technical program manager.
The person in this role will take ownership of build platform foundations designed to make component delivery faster, more consistent, and self-service for development groups, while guaranteeing reliable artifacts for customer installation and operation. Responsibilities include defining the Build team roadmap across UBT, TUBE, and the broader build platform, managing the delivery of packages, container images, and cloud marketplace images, and implementing a build-once, deploy-everywhere approach across Omnibus, CNG, and future targets. Additionally, the position involves centralizing dependency management, safeguarding the supply chain through SBOMs and provenance, establishing self-service onboarding tracks with standard continuous integration templates, and integrating AI tools to enhance team productivity.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Build team roadmap across UBT, TUBE, and the broader build platform
- Oversee the delivery of GitLab distributable artifacts such as packages, container images, and cloud marketplace images
- Drive a build-once, deploy-everywhere model across Omnibus, CNG, and future delivery targets
- Direct centralized dependency management and coordinated updates across components
- Protect supply chain security utilizing SBOMs, provenance, vetted dependencies, and compliant build isolation
- Design self-service onboarding pathways featuring standard continuous integration templates, documentation, and paved paths
- Enhance build quality and consistency by utilizing unified build environments and validation
- Set up observability, dashboards, and metrics for build pipelines and platform impact
- Collaborate across Delivery and adjacent teams to eliminate onboarding blocks and minimize coordination overhead
Requirements
- Demonstrated background in building and owning large-scale distributed services with architectural depth
- Experience driving operational excellence and maintaining services running at four-nines (99.99%) SLOs
- Experience leveraging AI tooling to improve team productivity with documented wins and missteps
- History of building and managing high-performing, accountable team cultures including managing out when necessary
- Comfort leading complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated TPM
- Experience leading distributed and remote teams effectively
