Job Description

Paddle is hiring a full-time Engineering Manager for its Subscriptions team. Paddle is a Merchant of Record that manages payments, taxes and payouts for digital software businesses. The Subscriptions team builds the product behind Paddle's recurring revenue, giving customers control over every stage of a subscription, from plan switches and upgrades or downgrades to proration, free trials and flexible billing cycles. The position is remote.

Every Paddle product engineering group pairs a product manager and an engineering manager with four to six engineers. Support comes from specialists in design, data, security, platform and developer tooling. The engineering manager leads initiatives from early concept and planning through to launch, working with engineers and colleagues from other functions. The role is technical but not hands-on coding; the manager is expected to lead rather than write production code.

Core duties include developing team members personally and professionally, partnering with the product manager on a roadmap, and refining how the team works. The manager oversees technical decisions and holds responsibility for technical strategy in the team's product area. The position also contributes to metrics within Paddle's broader data strategy and helps keep a high-traffic, event-driven system reliable and scalable.

Candidates should have at least two years of people management with several direct reports, and a background as a senior engineer on complex, large-scale cloud systems. Experience with Go or a similar language is expected. Having built or grown subscription or recurring billing products would count heavily, and so would work on payments, money transfers and reconciliation. The person works closely with finance, risk and legal colleagues and communicates clearly with both engineers and non-technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Steer projects from first idea and planning all the way to release
  • Manage and coach engineers so they grow personally and professionally
  • Shape a sustainable roadmap with the product manager
  • Refine team processes and practices that are not working well
  • Oversee technical decisions and technical strategy for the product area
  • Contribute to metrics within Paddle's wider data strategy
  • Raise dependability and growth-readiness of a busy, event-based system
  • Help set engineering principles across the department

Requirements

  • Experience with Go or a similar language
  • At least two years of people management with several direct reports
  • Proven background as a senior software engineer on complex cloud systems
  • A clear picture of what makes an engineering team high-performing and sustainable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including leading technical discussions
  • Comfort with ambiguity, a bias for action and a strong customer focus

Qualifications

  • Background constructing or expanding subscription and recurring billing software
  • Experience with payments, transfers and financial reconciliation
  • Interest in the mechanics of money movement and in working with finance, risk and legal teams

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Limitless holiday time and four months of family leave with pay for all
  • A yearly development fund and frequent training, in-house and outside
  • Remote working, hub-based working, or a blend of both
