Job Description
Canonical is hiring a Golang System Software Engineer for its LXD team, which is building a next-generation private cloud. The team combines KVM, Ceph and software-defined networking to create a data-centre-scale cloud intended for mission-critical edge and core enterprise deployments. The company has more than 1,000 colleagues across over 70 countries.
The role is remote and open in EMEA and the Americas. The engineer works in the low-level Go layer that sits between the REST API and the C libraries that handle containers and virtual machines. The posting describes LXD as spanning everything from low-level kernel features up to the management API and command line, and it values engineers who can predict how choices in one layer affect the rest of a distributed system.
Duties include designing, implementing and documenting system-level Go code, modelling data and designing a database schema for storage in dqlite, and keeping code quality high through static analysis and unit and system tests. The engineer collaborates with a distributed team, discusses ideas to reach good solutions, and works from home with occasional global travel, two to four weeks annually, for in-house and outside events.
The ideal candidate has programming experience in Go and C, knowledge of networking and storage technologies, and work in at least two of cloud, virtualisation, containers, distributed systems or open-source community settings. A bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, a STEM subject or similar is expected. The post also values soft skills, curiosity and accountability. No salary is stated.
