Job Description
ClassDojo is seeking a Head of Accounting (Controller) to direct and expand the company's entire accounting and tax strategy, reporting directly to the CFO. Operating globally across more than 180 countries, ClassDojo provides a widely used school communication platform connecting teachers, children, and families, and is currently expanding its offerings to deliver broader learning experiences. This fully remote position offers the opportunity to establish robust financial systems, oversee monthly closes, manage annual audits, and guide the accounting team alongside external consultants.
The ideal candidate is an energetic and entrepreneurial leader equipped to scale financial controls and operations. Responsibilities will encompass general ledger management, accounts payable, technical and revenue accounting, financial reporting, payroll, equity, tax, and treasury functions. Additionally, this role will collaborate with cross-functional leadership spanning Strategic Finance, People, Engineering, and Legal, while offering direct support for corporate development initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions, fundraising, secondary transactions, and potential future public offerings.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and scale all facets of the company's accounting and tax operations, strategy, and related areas such as procurement
- Build and scale financial systems, policies, and processes to support business growth
- Manage the monthly close process, annual audits, financial reporting, and overall control mechanisms
- Direct the in-house accounting team and external consultants covering general ledger, accounts payable, technical accounting, revenue, payroll, equity, tax, and treasury
- Partner with stakeholders across business units and functional teams including Strategic Finance, People, Engineering, and Legal
- Assist the CFO and other executives with strategic transactions including fundraising, M&A, secondary deals, and potential IPO preparations
Requirements
- Possess at least 12 years of professional accounting experience
- Accumulate a minimum of 3 years of experience working at a top-tier audit firm
- Accumulate 8 or more years of in-house accounting experience within fast-growing startup environments
- Demonstrate prior success in building and retaining a multi-level accounting team consisting of managers and individual contributors
- Demonstrate experience designing and managing full-cycle accounting close and operations, encompassing tax, treasury, payroll, and equity administration
- Lead accounting teams through multiple clean audits conducted by Big Four firms
- Apply US GAAP knowledge to complex business transactions while documenting conclusions and defending positions to external auditors
- Show a proven history of scaling finance operations through major process or systems overhauls, including AI-powered workflows
- Manage global indirect tax compliance, including US sales tax and international VAT or GST
Qualifications
- Hold an active CPA license
- Bring experience in a lead-level accounting role at a public technology company
- Possess familiarity with emerging AI-native finance tooling such as Rillet
- Demonstrate background working with complex businesses featuring multiple products and varied revenue models
- Exhibit experience in business combination accounting and integrations
