Job Description

The organization is currently seeking an Intermediate-Senior Backend Engineer to join the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. This remote, full-time position focuses on building agentic workflows that translate initial intentions into structured work items, implementation plans, and verified code. The role suits an engineer interested in early-stage backend development using tools like Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, and large language model application programming interfaces. During the first year, the incumbent will guide substantial features from initial concept through public beta release, mentor peers, and shape technical decisions within a distributed, four-person team.

Responsibilities

Manage backend features from early conceptual discussions through implementation, release, and post-launch evaluation
Construct the APIs, data models, and workflows that support agent-generated work items and specifications
Develop benchmarking and evaluation systems to track workflow performance, success rates, and token expenses
Write reliable production code utilizing Ruby on Rails and Python alongside PostgreSQL and GraphQL
Engage directly with users, designers, and product managers to define scope and negotiate practical trade-offs
Coordinate multi-person projects and articulate decisions asynchronously across a distributed team
Mentor fellow engineers and contribute to the technical direction of artificial intelligence initiatives

Requirements

Demonstrated production experience with Ruby on Rails within a large codebase
Professional background working with Python in production environments
Experience spearheading large projects involving multiple engineers over several months
Product-focused mindset with a history of owning features from conception to post-launch monitoring
Strong foundation in API design and SQL
Ability to read modern frontend code and design effective application programming interfaces
Prior exposure to artificial intelligence-assisted development workflows

Qualifications

Experience working with GraphQL
Familiarity with PostgreSQL performance optimization at scale
Background in building or evaluating large language model systems and AI agents
