Job Description
Samsara is recruiting a Lead Design Engineer for a fully remote position open to residents of the United States. The company is listed on the NYSE and sells a Connected Operations Cloud, a platform that lets businesses in physical sectors such as farming, building, field service, transportation and manufacturing turn Internet of Things data into insights that make their operations safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
This role centers on the design system that Samsara product teams rely on. The engineer works in both design tools and code, shipping highly interactive interfaces for web and mobile. Key tasks include defining components, styling patterns, design tokens and guidance that both human teammates and AI agents can use. The position also means building evaluations and feedback loops that improve AI-assisted design and code generation, and building accessibility, responsiveness and speed into the system from the start.
The engineer sets the rules for how the system is contributed to, governed and retired, keeps design decisions faithfully reflected in code, and gathers input from the people who build with the system. That input is weighed alongside usage data when choosing what to build next. Candidates are also expected to pass effective AI tools and working methods along to the wider design and engineering organization. The position suits a senior designer-engineer who has a portfolio of shipped design system work and practical experience with AI development tools.
Responsibilities
- Create core system components, evaluations and feedback loops that sharpen AI-assisted design and code output
- Establish the quality standards that keep AI-generated interfaces up to the product's bar
- Ensure design decisions map cleanly into code, with the team jointly responsible for quality, speed and long-term upkeep
- Make accessibility, responsive layouts and performance default features of the system
- Define how the system is contributed to, governed and retired, balancing pace against consistency
- Hold regular check-ins with the people who use the system and turn their feedback and usage data into next steps
- Pass along AI tools, workflows and techniques that work to other design and engineering staff
- Help embed Samsara's cultural principles as the company grows into new offices
Requirements
- Eight or more years across design engineering, design system work, product design or front-end development, with UX and UI work on web and mobile
- A track record of shipping design system or component library projects, supported by a portfolio with write-ups or sample code
- A portfolio is mandatory; the posting says applications without one cannot currently be considered
- Strong interaction and visual design ability, including judgment about when to follow an existing pattern and when to create a new one
- Working knowledge of token-based theming and accessibility guidelines
- Daily use of AI development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code or Figma Make, with shipped work that shows it
- Capacity to read, critique and troubleshoot AI-generated code
- Experience working alongside designers, engineers and PMs on rapid development cycles
Core Skills
Benefits
- Initial RSU equity grant without a vesting cliff, with ongoing refresh grants linked to performance
- Performance-based bonus or variable pay for eligible roles
- Flexible remote work model plus a professional development stipend
- Health coverage and parental leave programs
