Samsara is looking for a Lead Design Engineer to join its team. The company operates a Connected Operations Cloud platform that utilizes IoT data to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability across physical industries like transportation, construction, and manufacturing. In this position, you will build core systems, establish design components and patterns, and ship interactive user interfaces across both mobile and web platforms.
This role involves governing quality for AI-generated outputs, ensuring system decisions translate smoothly into code, and baking accessibility and performance into the design architecture. You will engage regularly with engineers and product designers, collect usage feedback, and distribute successful AI tools and workflows across teams. Candidates must be comfortable working in code as well as design.
Samsara provides an annual base salary ranging between CAD 151,300 and 195,800, alongside an initial restricted stock unit grant with no vesting cliff. The position is open to individuals residing in Canada under a remote work arrangement.
Responsibilities
- Develop core system elements, evaluation metrics, and feedback loops to strengthen AI design and code generation
- Establish standards to prevent low-quality AI outputs from reaching customers
- Translate system decisions into clean code while maintaining shared ownership of performance and maintainability
- Incorporate accessibility, responsiveness, and performance standards into the system by default
- Establish clear governance, contribution, and deprecation procedures balancing velocity with system integrity
- Engage regularly with designers and developers utilizing the system to collect feedback and metrics for future updates
- Share effective AI workflows, tools, and methodologies with engineering and design departments
Requirements
- At least 8 years of professional background in front-end engineering, design systems, product design, or design engineering focused on web and mobile user interfaces
- Experience shipping component libraries or design systems, supported by a portfolio or code samples
- Strong visual and interaction design capabilities with experience in theming, design tokens, and accessibility guidelines
- Regular usage of AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Figma Make with demonstrated output connected to a design system
- Ability to review, explain, and debug AI-generated code
- Demonstrated history of collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, and designers in short delivery cycles
- Legal right to work in the designated location
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master degree in Human Computer Interaction Design, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience
