Job Description
Twilio is a communications company that serves a large base of companies and developers, and it works remote-first. This machine learning engineering role sits on the Customer Memory team, which is building the AI and machine learning foundations that help applications, human agents and AI agents understand a customer's history and choose the right way to make contact.
The engineer runs quick research cycles on contextual intelligence and large-scale machine learning problems. Duties include extending a product that is already gaining users at pace, turning early ideas into experiments that can be designed and completed in weeks, studying approaches to LLM orchestration, retrieval and personalisation, and building systems that work at Twilio's scale. The engineer is also expected to pick up new tools fast and lean on current AI development stacks rather than building repetitive infrastructure by hand.
Candidates need at least five years of applied machine learning or AI experience and a history of owning complex systems from design through delivery. Python proficiency is required, along with practical cloud work on AWS, GCP or Azure that handles big data volumes and real-time predictions. Practical depth in production AI, spanning language model pipelines, embedding models and vector databases, is expected, as is a solid base in statistical learning and transformer models. The position is remote and based in India, in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra and New Delhi.
Responsibilities
- Build new features in a product that is gaining users quickly
- Design and run rigorous experiments on early ideas within a few weeks
- Study LLM orchestration, retrieval strategies and personalisation techniques
- Create machine learning systems capable of Twilio-scale traffic
- Learn new technical skills quickly in a high-pressure delivery setting
- Apply the newest AI tooling to cut down on repetitive engineering work

- Deep experience designing, shipping and operating production AI systems built around language model pipelines, embedding models and vector databases
- Solid understanding of statistical learning, transformer models and LLMs
- Ability to raise a team's technical bar through mentoring and design review
- Good communication and collaboration
Qualifications
- Experience building autonomous agents for multi-turn conversations that keep long-term context consistent
- Background in predicting user behaviour, including experiment design and causal or counterfactual methods
