ClickUp is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer specializing in Ranking and Retrieval to join its Search team. ClickUp develops an AI-native productivity platform that combines tasks, documents, chat, calendars, and enterprise search into a single converged workspace. Every team member at the company is expected to utilize artificial intelligence daily.
In this remote position, the engineer will own the machine learning systems that power search relevance for millions of users and provide context for the company's AI tools. The role involves managing the complete machine learning lifecycle, from training through production deployment and serving. The search architecture deals with large-scale, user-generated content within a multi-tenant platform where maintaining strict permissions-aware retrieval is essential.
Responsibilities
- Train, deploy, and serve ranking models in production across the complete machine learning lifecycle
- Develop ranker features, training pipelines, and offline evaluation frameworks
- Design and scale hybrid retrieval systems combining lexical and vector search with HNSW and disk offloading
- Run embedding inference at the scale of billions of documents
- Enhance query understanding via intent modeling and query expansion
- Construct permissions-aware retrieval mechanisms that maintain multi-tenant boundaries
- Establish measurement frameworks to assess and elevate search quality
- Partner with backend, AI, and Search Infrastructure teams to integrate platform ranking enhancements
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related discipline
- At least 5 years of machine learning engineering experience focused on information retrieval, ranking, or retrieval
- Demonstrated ownership of the full machine learning lifecycle including model training, deployment, and production serving
- Hands-on experience with ranker model training encompassing feature engineering, pipelines, and offline evaluation
- Experience developing hybrid lexical and vector retrieval systems
- Experience executing embedding inference at a large scale
- Solid fundamentals in query understanding including query expansion and intent modeling
Qualifications
- Experience with multi-tenancy and permission-aware retrieval
- Experience indexing large-scale user-generated content rather than static or small datasets
- Practical experience utilizing Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
- Experience with real-time ingestion, sharding, and index management at scale
- Background in semantic search, natural language processing, or agentic retrieval
- Experience using TypeScript in backend environments
