Job Description

Gusto operates a platform serving over 500,000 small businesses across the United States by managing payroll, health insurance, 401(k) plans, and human resources administration. Offices are maintained in San Francisco, Denver, and New York.

Gusto seeks a Senior Software Engineer to act as the primary architect and hands-on developer for PeopleOS, the proprietary AI-native internal human resources platform. This individual will create, maintain, and expand custom integrations and applications that streamline internal operations and support the internal workforce. The position suits an experienced, full-stack practitioner who is comfortable navigating ambiguity and building software designed for daily internal usage.

The role operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring approximately two to three days in the physical San Francisco office per week. Team members are expected to actively engage with artificial intelligence applications relevant to their daily duties.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the architecture and development of PeopleOS, incorporating features such as the Offer Workflow Engine, People Home Base portal, Celebration tools, and automated Talk Track generation.
  • Collaborate directly with People Operations stakeholders to map workflows into functional software, handling design, implementation, user acceptance testing support, and deployment.
  • Design, construct, test, and support integrations across platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, Lattice, Slack, and Google Workspace.
  • Develop and sustain custom Model Context Protocol servers to grant AI agents structured entry to internal data.
  • Incorporate the Anthropic Claude API to generate intelligent internal solutions including coaching agents, chat interfaces, and ticket deflection workflows.
  • Record integration specifications, data mappings, and system setups within Notion.
  • Engage in Jira sprint planning sessions and present demonstrations to stakeholders every two weeks.
  • Investigate technical issues, determine underlying causes, and deploy fixes across the tool portfolio.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of full-stack software engineering background, featuring production-grade work utilizing Python, TypeScript, Node.js, or a combination.
  • Robust proficiency in building and consuming REST APIs, encompassing OAuth flows, rate limiting, pagination, and error management.
  • Demonstrated capability in connecting SaaS platforms such as Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, or Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and large language model API integration like Anthropic Claude or OpenAI, featuring prompt design and response parsing.
  • Background in launching internal applications or developer utilities featuring real users and feedback loops.
  • Advanced written communication abilities to document custom APIs, author technical specifications, and explain tradeoffs.
  • Comprehension of the sensitive nature surrounding human resources data, alongside awareness of labor regulations and data retention policies.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol server architecture.
  • Background working within human resources technology ecosystems including HRIS, ATS, and LMS platforms.
  • Experience in People Operations, HR Systems, or internal tool engineering within a fast-growing technology enterprise.
