Job Description
GitLab seeks a Principal Engineer for the Duo Agent Platform to establish technical direction for agentic orchestration across the software lifecycle. GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, serving over fifty million registered users and more than fifty percent of the Fortune 100. In this remote, full-time role reporting to the VP of AI Engineering, you will lead hands-on development for systems spanning agent execution, model routing, event-driven triggering, the AI Catalog, and enterprise governance surfaces.
This role suits a technical leader capable of designing reliable multi-tenant architectures that operate seamlessly across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments. You will define session lifecycles, optimize latency and costs, architect extensibility for custom agents and external tools, and establish evaluation and governance practices alongside security and product teams. The position requires strong asynchronous communication skills and active participation in the incident management on-call rotation for GitLab.com.
Responsibilities
- Define technical direction for a major segment of the Duo Agent Platform across multiple teams and partner with product and engineering management on a six-month roadmap
- Build a reliable orchestration layer handling session lifecycles, tool invocation, context assembly, concurrency, retries, and graceful degradation
- Drive initiatives hands-on from proof-of-concept through architecture to complete implementation
- Participate in the incident management on-call rotation to help meet availability goals for GitLab.com
- Write clear design documents, architecture narratives, and decision records to align other teams
- Ensure architecture supports multi-tenant GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed environments, including self-hosted models
- Mentor staff and senior engineers while raising the bar for experimentation rigor and collaboration
- Design extensibility surfaces enabling custom agents, internal tool integration, and external agent incorporation like Claude Code and Codex
- Drive down request latency and costs while working with product on model selection, routing, and credit consumption
- Define offline benchmarks and online evaluation practices to measure task completion, correctness, and cost per task
- Build governance and safety mechanisms with security and compliance teams, including policy-driven controls and audit trails
- Complete interview training and participate in departmental hiring as a technical interviewer or panel member
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years of experience at a staff, principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership level
- Hands-on production experience building on large language models covering agent loops, tool calling, context management, retrieval, prompt evaluation, and model evaluation
- Strong background in distributed systems including service decomposition, fault tolerance, observability, and operational resilience under multi-tenant load
- Experience shipping AI capabilities to real users rather than solely prototyping
- Experience defining evaluation frameworks and using benchmark results to guide architecture decisions
- Experience designing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices
- Ability to drive alignment across engineering, product, infrastructure, and security on ambiguous problems
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and guiding technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority
- Comfort working in one or more of Ruby, Go, Python, or TypeScript with a willingness to work across the stack
- Excellent written and asynchronous communication skills for a globally distributed remote organization
