Job Description
1Password is a cybersecurity company best known for its enterprise password manager and for pioneering a category it calls Unified Access Management. The company reports more than 400 million dollars in annual recurring revenue and serves over 180,000 businesses. It is hiring a Principal Engineer to set technical direction for its core product experiences. It is a senior, non-managerial technical role with company-wide reach, not limited to one team or subsystem.
The engineer defines architecture, engineering standards and reusable patterns across the apps customers use, distributed services, data platforms and common infrastructure. Responsibilities include shaping long-term strategy, guiding how AI-powered features enter customer products, and setting expectations for evaluation, rollout safety, telemetry, fallback behavior and auditability. The engineer collaborates with Data, Infrastructure, Privacy, Security, Design and Product groups, helps teams weigh speed against durability, raises standards for reliability and incident readiness, and mentors engineers through design reviews and hands-on work.
Candidates should have built and run large distributed systems, led architecture across several teams, and delivered customer-facing systems that involve APIs, cloud infrastructure and data platforms. Experience with event-driven or microservice designs and with putting machine learning into production is needed, along with an instinct for privacy-preserving and security-conscious engineering. Helpful background includes identity and authorization, multi-region systems, cross-platform architecture, developer platforms and endpoint or browser security. The role is remote and open in Canada and the United States. The USA base salary is USD 246,000 to 369,000 per year, plus benefits, PTO and an equity grant.
