The chosen candidate will drive operational and platform transformation across failover and resilience, change management, tenant orchestration, self-service tooling, and platform integrations. Additionally, the role involves aligning the Dedicated offering with modular and cell-based architectures, enhancing service ownership, and designing scalable patterns to minimize operational complexity. This position is suited for professionals with deep expertise in Site Reliability, Backend, or Platform Engineering who can provide architectural guidance, mentor senior engineers, and tackle systemic reliability challenges.
Responsibilities
- Define technical direction and shape platform strategy for GitLab Dedicated
- Spearhead platform transformations in resilience, failover, tenant orchestration, change management, self-service tooling, and integrations
- Promote scalable and modular architecture aligned with the broader Cells strategy
- Improve operational maturity and service ownership across engineering teams
- Identify and resolve systemic reliability and scalability risks based on incident patterns and production signals
- Create reusable platform patterns and automation to reduce toil and scale efficiently
- Drive complex technical decisions while balancing security, cost, reliability, maintainability, and customer requirements
- Advance organizational engineering excellence through mentorship and architectural leadership
Requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in Site Reliability, Platform, Infrastructure, or Backend Engineering
- Hands-on background with cloud infrastructure, observability, automation, infrastructure as code, and modern production engineering methods
- Solid software engineering fundamentals including building production systems or infrastructure tooling in Go, Ruby, Python, or comparable languages
- Extensive distributed systems and systems-design knowledge focusing on failure isolation, scalability, reliability, and operational complexity
- Demonstrated history of technical leadership across multiple teams to drive initiatives through influence
- Experience managing major platform or infrastructure transformations like modernization, scaling, or modularization
- Background in driving changes that elevate production system ownership, operational readiness, and accountability
- Advanced technical communication and influence capabilities
