Job Description

Canonical is recruiting a remote, full-time Python Software Engineer for its Commercial Systems unit, with work based in the EMEA region. The unit consists of six engineering teams that partner closely with engineering and business groups across the company. Its services are core to Canonical's commercial operations, and Python is central to building them. The company is distributed and founder-led, and it publishes Ubuntu.

The engineer joins the Integrations team, which automates SaaS user administration and new-user onboarding, and connects new data sources to the company's data mesh. The team builds and runs a Python system that manages software seat allocations and monitors spending across the application estate. It also feeds internal and external data into the mesh with open source ETL tooling so that decisions across the business can be data-driven.

Responsibilities include building engineering solutions in Python, contributing to technical design and peer code reviews, and deploying and operating the team's services. Depending on experience, engineers may mentor colleagues, provide career development input, and help set strong engineering and organisational habits across the group.

Applicants should have a strong academic background, ideally a technical undergraduate degree or a clearly explained alternative route. A history of exceeding expectations, professional-level Python development experience, and fluent English with polished presentation skills are needed. The job involves international travel twice a year for company gatherings of up to two weeks. Helpful extras are experience with performance engineering and security, plus hands-on use of Airbyte, Ranger, Temporal or Trino.

Responsibilities

  • Experience developing software in Python
  • Record of exceeding expectations to deliver strong results
  • Fluent English in writing and conversation, with polished presentation skills
  • Driven to meet commitments and deliver results
  • Able to fly abroad twice a year at company gatherings

Qualifications

  • Technical undergraduate qualification or a convincing different route
  • Performance engineering and security experience (nice to have)
  • Hands-on use of Airbyte, Ranger, Temporal or Trino tooling (nice to have)

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Performance-linked annual bonus or commission
  • USD 2,000 yearly learning budget
  • Annual pay review and recognition awards
  • Holiday, maternity and paternity leave, and an employee assistance programme
  • Two in-person team sprints per year and visits to new locations
  • Priority Pass and upgrades on long-haul company travel
