The company is currently hiring a Safety Engineer with a backend focus for a remote position. This role centers on designing, building, and scaling automated moderation platforms, abuse detection tools, and safety guardrails for AI agents. The successful candidate will own production infrastructure, deploy machine learning models into production systems, and create end-to-end backend services, APIs, and internal tools. This position requires partnering closely with machine learning engineers, product groups, legal departments, and safety policy teams to turn regulatory guidelines and policy needs into scalable technical solutions.
This role is ideal for software engineers who possess strong backend experience, enjoy handling systems from architectural design through ongoing maintenance, and want to navigate the balance between platform safety and product growth.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and scale automated moderation systems, abuse detection capabilities, and safety guardrails for AI agents
- Partner with the Investigations team to identify emerging abuse patterns and continuously improve detection mechanisms
- Build and maintain internal safety services, taking full ownership of their architecture, deployment, reliability, and monitoring
- Collaborate with machine learning engineers to integrate fine-tuned and proprietary models into production safety systems
- Develop backend services, APIs, internal tools, and user-facing interfaces for moderation and policy enforcement
- Work alongside Product, Legal, and Safety Policy teams to translate requirements into scalable engineering solutions
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems
- Strong backend engineering background including API design, database work, and scalable service creation
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern backend frameworks
- Experience developing and maintaining distributed systems and cloud-based applications
- Ability to own systems end to end from technical design to deployment, monitoring, and maintenance
- Experience building across different parts of the stack, including internal tools or frontend interfaces
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to handle ambiguous requirements and pragmatic engineering decisions
- Effective collaboration skills working across technical and non-technical functions
Qualifications
- Experience building Trust and Safety, content moderation, fraud detection, or abuse prevention systems
- Experience building guardrails or safety infrastructure for AI agents and LLM-based applications
- Experience deploying and integrating machine learning models into production applications
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Prometheus and Grafana
- Experience with React or other modern frontend frameworks
- Experience with real-time data processing, event-driven architectures, Kafka, or Redis
