Job Description
GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps that helps organizations enhance developer efficiency, streamline operations, and minimize security and compliance risks. The organization is currently seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Nonlinear Productivity architecture engineering team on an on-site, full-time basis.
In this role, you will investigate and eliminate operational friction throughout the software development lifecycle by creating dependable, AI-driven automation. Operating within a startup-style incubation group reporting to the CTO, you will address challenges such as reducing code review durations and transforming error-prone release tasks into self-correcting agentic workflows. You will navigate various parts of the codebase, design evaluation tools to assess agent outputs, and collaborate closely with an affiliated group based in India.
This opportunity suits autonomous engineers who thrive in greenfield problem spaces, possess strong distributed systems expertise, and want to help shape a brand-new capability intended for future customer offerings.
Responsibilities
- Identify friction sources across the software development lifecycle and scope agentic solutions into concrete proposals
- Design and build reliable AI-powered systems featuring step-by-step workflows, tool use, safety checks, and error correction
- Develop and maintain evaluation tools to measure agent output regarding correctness, constraint compliance, and cost
- Navigate across the codebase as needed to address friction points rather than remaining confined to a single service area
- Apply distributed systems judgment to evaluate generated code behavior under concurrency, scale, and various deployment topologies
- Collaborate with the India-based group to share roadmaps, research findings, and reusable agent tooling
- Own a greenfield problem space from inception to help mature internal solutions into external customer capabilities
Requirements
- Practical experience building production-ready agentic or large language model-based systems including multi-step orchestration, tool usage, guardrails, and recovery patterns
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and drive solutions to completion
- Solid distributed systems knowledge encompassing coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes, and load degradation
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, alongside the capability to read and modify code written in the other specified languages
Qualifications
- Experience shipping autonomous agents that finish real tasks from start to finish
- Background improving build systems, release procedures, review workflows, or related software development lifecycle areas
- Experience cooperating with globally distributed teams, managing large language model workload expenses, or handling production constraints across diverse deployment environments
Core Skills
Benefits
- Flexible Paid Time Off
- Team Member Resource Groups
- Equity Compensation and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
- Growth and Development Fund
- Parental Leave
