Job Description

GitLab is seeking a Staff Frontend Engineer to join the Core DevOps team in India. GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by over fifty million registered users and more than fifty percent of the Fortune one hundred to accelerate software delivery, enhance developer productivity, and minimize security and compliance risks. In this position, the engineer will provide technical leadership across multiple squads, tackle sophisticated frontend problems, independently deliver large features, and refine architectural standards to help teams execute rapidly without sacrificing quality. This role involves collaborating closely with product managers, designers, engineering managers, and peer engineers to shape global user experiences and frontend architecture, including the integration of agentic artificial intelligence into workflows. The ideal candidate has a strong background in web application architecture and technical leadership, and is eager to build tools that influence how software is developed globally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design and delivery of major frontend initiatives across multiple teams.
  • Drive long-term strategy for the frontend platform, design systems, and shared architecture.
  • Define and elevate standards for versioning, testing, documentation, accessibility, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Modernize legacy or monolithic frontend architectures into modular, reusable, and independently deployable units.
  • Establish versioned module contracts along with safe build, test, deploy, release, and rollback mechanisms.
  • Formulate shared patterns for dependency management, observability, error isolation, design system integration, and performance budgets.
  • Influence technical direction using written proposals and architectural oversight.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leaders regarding roadmaps, technical debt, and trade-offs.
  • Mentor senior and intermediate engineers.
  • Create guardrails for artificial-intelligence-assisted workflows to safeguard code quality, security, privacy, and evaluation standards.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated technical leadership history across multiple teams or a wide product domain.
  • Extensive frontend architecture and production experience working on complex web applications.
  • Background in scaling or governing design systems, frontend platforms, or shared component architectures.
  • Production experience with modular frontend architectures such as package encapsulation, Web Components, frontend islands, or runtime composition.
  • Demonstrated ability to build alignment without formal authority via written proposals and decision records.
  • Capacity to balance user outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, and platform investments.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and guiding standards through code reviews, documentation, and evaluation of AI-driven workflows.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Vue, React, Angular, TypeScript, or JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, Redis, or object storage.
  • Experience with REST or GraphQL application programming interfaces.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Google Kubernetes Engine, Docker, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience using observability tools like Prometheus or Sentry.
