Deliveroo is currently seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their team in London on a full-time, on-site basis. In this role, you will help design and develop a unified Common case-management system that supports operations across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt. The position involves driving end-to-end backend initiatives, managing asynchronous workflows, designing APIs, and overseeing the safe migration of traffic from legacy platforms.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys tackling ambiguous operational challenges, building scalable backend services, and setting high standards for reliability and technical craftsmanship. You will work closely with cross-functional partners including product, operations, and support teams to establish project roadmaps, author design documents, and guide technical decision-making.
Successful candidates will bring strong backend engineering experience at scale, proficiency in modern programming languages, and a proven ability to mentor peers and lead complex projects from conception through to production rollout. Responsibilities
- Lead project-level Case Management initiatives from initial discovery and technical design through to rollout, measurement, and operational ownership
- Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for case creation, routing, assignment, transfers, audit history, and queue management
- Drive traffic migration from legacy platforms while maintaining feature parity across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo
- Write comprehensive technical design documents, analyze system dependencies and risks, and break down delivery plans
- Collaborate with Product, Operations, Support, Data, and engineering teams to define project requirements and shape the team roadmap
- Enforce quality objectives through design reviews, improved logging, monitoring, alerting, and proactive incident response
- Mentor engineers via code reviews, technical guidance, constructive feedback, and the promotion of AI development best practices
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering background in designing and operating services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and data models at scale
- Proficiency in at least one modern backend language with a history of writing clean code for core system components
- Demonstrated ownership of complex, customer-facing or operations-critical projects from design to production rollout
- Experience breaking projects into parallelizable work streams, tracking dependencies, and providing accurate delivery estimates
- Hands-on expertise using AI development tools while validating outputs for correctness, security, privacy, and reliability
- Strong product judgment with the ability to translate ambiguous operational workflows into maintainable technical solutions
- Solid grounding in engineering craft, including testing, code review, observability, incident management, and security readiness
Qualifications
- Professional experience with Go
- Background in legacy system migrations, traffic shadowing, gradual rollouts, and feature-parity programs
- Experience supporting internal tools or operational user interfaces from the backend perspective
- Familiarity with high-volume, multi-region, or multi-tenant architectures
- Previous experience acting as an incident commander or managing on-call rotations
- Background in building and evaluating AI-powered product features
