GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations accelerate digital transformation, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce security and compliance risks. The platform is utilized by over 50 million registered users and more than half of the Fortune 100. The organization seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Cloud Cost & Capacity capability within the Cloud Cost Utilization team under Infrastructure Platforms.
In this position, the professional will serve as the initial engineer dedicated to this capability. Responsibilities include shaping technical direction, building data pipelines from Google Cloud billing and telemetry, establishing attribution models, and creating internal software to help service owners monitor and plan cloud infrastructure usage for GitLab.com. The role requires collaborating with Finance, product teams, service owners, and infrastructure engineers, as well as incorporating artificial intelligence into daily engineering workflows.

Responsibilities
- Construct data pipelines utilizing Google Cloud billing exports and Cloud Monitoring telemetry to generate queryable fleet usage data in BigQuery
- Attribute shared usage and costs across Google Kubernetes Engine clusters to the corresponding services and teams
- Create demand and capacity tooling that profiles infrastructure needs across regions and machine families
- Deploy internal applications that replace manual spreadsheets with software for engineers and budget owners
- Define service standards, data models, and engineering architectures for future team members
- Partner with finance, product, and infrastructure teams to translate business needs into technical designs
- Integrate artificial intelligence into daily engineering processes to boost efficiency
Requirements
- Demonstrated track record of designing and launching production backend services with end-to-end ownership
- Strong structured query language capabilities handling large datasets alongside experience building data pipelines and models
- Familiarity with cloud billing and usage data
- Working knowledge of a major cloud provider, preferably Google Cloud, including Kubernetes, compute services, and billing models
- Proficiency in a general-purpose programming language for creating pipelines and tooling
Qualifications
- Experience with OpenCost, Kubecost, or Google Kubernetes Engine cost allocation
- Background in cloud financial management or FinOps practices and certifications
- Familiarity with cost or capacity forecasting, modeling, or anomaly detection
- Experience working with Terraform
- Knowledge of Grafana, Looker, or Looker Studio
- Background in founding engineering work
- Prior use of artificial intelligence within engineering workflows
