Job Description
Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer - Databases - Analytics to join its fully remote team. This role is open to applicants located in Canada or the US. Grafana Labs provides a managed observability platform utilized by over 10,000 organizations to monitor systems and resolve incidents.
This position is part of a skunkworks initiative tasked with building an AI-native data intelligence system. The database layer features both OLAP and OTLP capabilities, separating compute and storage to support analytical queries alongside fresh data storage across multiple cloud providers. The team operates autonomously within a collaborative environment, giving engineers the opportunity to shape architectural decisions, build multi-tenant SaaS foundations, and evolve prototypes into production-grade systems.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and operate components of the database such as ingestion, query planning, distributed query execution, data formats, and storage formats
- Build architecture for a multi-tenant database service including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and service boundaries
- Develop APIs and database interfaces to support data retrieval workflows for AI agents, model context protocol tools, CLIs, and internal applications
- Collaborate across product and infrastructure to balance rapid experimentation with long-term reliability from prototype to production
- Instrument database services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards to monitor system behavior
- Contribute to the technical direction, architecture, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices for the product area
Requirements
- Solid experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems with minimal supervision
- Familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks alongside a practical focus on real-world solutions
- Mastery of a programming language such as Go, C++, or Rust
- Proven track record of delivering software that reached production and is actively used
- Exposure to cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Experience using observability tools for troubleshooting and understanding system behavior
- Background in distributed systems, catalogs, table formats, or query engines
Qualifications
