Operating as a fully remote company with team members across more than 40 countries, Grafana Labs provides cloud and on-premise telemetry solutions built on open-source projects like Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope.
The Databases team currently seeks a Senior Backend Software Engineer to focus on Loki. In this role, you will design, operate, and maintain distributed multi-tenant systems written in Go and running on Kubernetes across major cloud providers including GCP, Azure, and AWS. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who values autonomy, transparency, and collaboration within an innovation-driven engineering culture. Grafana Labs equips its engineering organization with modern AI coding assistants and usage budgets to support rapid prototyping, testing, and documentation.
This position is open to applicants located in the United States or Canada. Team members participate in on-call rotations and collaborate closely in a distributed environment utilizing video calls and structured communication. In addition to core technical responsibilities, engineers have opportunities to mentor peers, contribute to broader open-source initiatives, and shape product roadmaps from initial ideation through operational delivery.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, operate, and maintain critical distributed systems while owning their performance, availability, and reliability
- Influence team roadmaps and personal career objectives
- Collaborate with teammates to deliver new features, analyze results, and iteratively improve systems
- Drive engineering projects from initial brainstorming and ideation through customer operations
- Contribute to open-source projects outside the direct team scope
- Participate in on-call rotations and take responsibility for running services
- Mentor and support other team members during design discussions and collaborative projects
Requirements
- Solid experience with at least one programming language, such as Go, Python, C, C++, or Rust
- Experience independently delivering software projects from gathering requirements and brainstorming to production deployment
- Experience developing software running in the cloud or background in systems engineering
- Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and easily maintained software
- Strong communication skills suited for a fully remote working setup
Qualifications
- Experience writing low-level code for databases, storage layers, or query engines
- Experience working with Kubernetes
- Experience as a user of Grafana or Prometheus in operational roles, on-call rotations, or personal homelab projects
- Exposure to microservices architectures and distributed systems
- Familiarity with on-call operations, SRE tasks, or infrastructure as code concepts
