As a Senior Backend Engineer within the Platform Enablement organization's Deployment Environments team, the professional in this role will focus on making GitLab simpler to operate, validate, and deploy across various environments. Responsibilities center on cloud-native deployment guidance and ephemeral environments. The engineer will help transition self-managed deployment guidance beyond legacy reference architectures into modern cloud-native models involving deployment patterns, topology guidance, scaling principles, and workload characterization. Additionally, the role involves refining production-like ephemeral environments to allow teams to test code earlier under conditions reflecting real-world operations.
This position requires strong backend engineering experience, familiarity with distributed applications or Kubernetes-based systems, and an understanding of platform engineering or environment management. Responsibilities
- Build workflows and tooling for self-managed and cloud-native deployment environments
- Contribute to cloud-native deployment guidance encompassing architecture patterns, component requirements, scaling principles, and topology guidance
- Enhance ephemeral environments to bring validation closer to production reality
- Maintain consistent deployment artifacts and environment contracts across application, infrastructure, and platform boundaries
- Collaborate with partner teams regarding delivery workflows, packaging, testing, and customer-facing deployment guidance
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering experience
- Familiarity with Kubernetes-based systems, platform engineering, or distributed applications
- Experience with cloud-native operations, deployment architecture, or environment management
