As the Senior Engineering Manager for Agents and Context within the Platform group, you will lead a distributed engineering unit of roughly 12 professionals building the conversational and agentic platform for Elasticsearch users. You will work alongside a Product Manager and Technical Lead to drive product delivery, manage hiring pipelines, mentor staff, and handle performance reviews. This role requires partnering closely with data science, user experience, and other related teams to establish team processes and predictable execution in a fast-paced environment.
This position suits an experienced engineering leader with a background in software development, distributed team management, and familiarity with modern LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation, and search systems.
Responsibilities
- Manage the delivery schedule for the Chat roadmap by breaking objectives into milestones and mitigating project risks
- Oversee the complete hiring cycle for the team, including writing descriptions, sourcing candidates with recruiters, running interviews, and onboarding
- Coach, develop, and provide regular feedback to engineers at various levels through scheduled one-on-one meetings
- Handle performance management processes such as promotions, development plans, and addressing underperformance
- Collaborate with the Technical Lead and Product Manager to establish product priorities and shape the roadmap
- Partner with data science, user experience, and other agents and context groups on shared primitives and quality metrics
- Establish and refine team workflows surrounding planning, asynchronous communication, releases, and on-call responsibilities
Requirements
- Proven background as an engineering manager overseeing software development teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management
- History of delivering large-scale software projects across multiple teams within a distributed, asynchronous working environment
- Prior hands-on software engineering experience as a senior contributor with deep technical knowledge of TypeScript, Node, React, and Elasticsearch-backed systems
- Familiarity with large language model applications, retrieval-augmented generation, agents, tool use, prompt engineering, and evaluation
- Strong product acumen with the ability to navigate ambiguity and set priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear long-form writing capabilities
