Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager for its Agents and Context group within the Platform organization. In this position, you will direct a distributed team of about twelve engineers who build conversational and agentic systems allowing users to interact with data in Elasticsearch. Working alongside a Product Manager and a Technical Lead, you will oversee project delivery, map out milestones, handle hiring and onboarding, and support team members through coaching and performance management. Responsibilities
- Manage roadmap delivery by breaking goals into milestones, identifying risks, and ensuring predictable shipping schedules
- Oversee the full hiring lifecycle, including crafting job descriptions, managing interview loops, partnering with recruiting, and handling onboarding
- Mentor and coach engineers through consistent feedback, regular one-on-one meetings, and clear expectations
- Drive performance management processes such as promotions, development plans, and resolutions for underperformance
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Technical Leads, data science teams, and UX groups to establish shared priorities and quality metrics
- Develop and refine team processes for planning, asynchronous communication, and release protocols through written consensus
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience as an engineering manager overseeing software teams, covering hiring, coaching, promotions, and performance management
- Background in guiding large, multi-team software projects within a distributed, async-first environment
- Prior hands-on software engineering experience as a senior contributor with technical familiarity in TypeScript, Node, React, and Elasticsearch-backed systems
- Understanding of LLM-powered applications, including retrieval-augmented generation, agents, tool use, evaluation, and prompt engineering
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on concise long-form writing
