Instacart is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join its Enterprise AI organization. The company operates a grocery delivery and household goods platform designed to connect customers, retailers, and personal shoppers. In this role, you will design, develop, and launch production-grade machine learning systems that generate measurable business results. You will manage the entire machine learning lifecycle, handling everything from initial problem definition and data preparation to experimentation, deployment, and performance monitoring. Working in a fast-paced setting, you will partner alongside product managers, data scientists, platform engineers, and business stakeholders to turn complex challenges into scalable solutions.

Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and deploy machine learning models and services to support Enterprise AI initiatives
- Own the complete machine learning lifecycle including problem framing, feature creation, model training, offline testing, experimentation, rollout, and monitoring
- Write reliable and maintainable code in Python while applying testing, profiling, code review, and debugging practices
- Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, and business teams to establish success metrics and deliver solutions
- Operate machine learning services on cloud infrastructure with proper monitoring, alerting, and operational safeguards
- Evaluate model quality and guide launch decisions using experimentation, statistical analysis, and counterfactual evaluation methods
- Contribute to team architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical direction
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or an equivalent technical field, or relevant practical experience
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in developing and deploying production machine learning models and systems
- Proficiency in Python and SQL with a background in producing test-driven, reviewed, and profiled code
- Proven history of managing the full machine learning lifecycle from data preparation through production monitoring
- Hands-on experience building and operating cloud-based machine learning services or data products on platforms like Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services
- Familiarity with containerized applications, Docker, continuous integration, and incident response procedures
- Demonstrated capability to collaborate across disciplines with product, engineering, and business stakeholders
Qualifications
- Master degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline
- Experience building machine learning systems tailored for large-scale, high-throughput, or low-latency use cases
- Familiarity with distributed data processing, real-time feature computation, streaming systems, and feature stores
- Experience utilizing model serving, orchestration, and machine learning platforms including Kubernetes, Airflow, or Spark
- Background in designing simulation, counterfactual evaluation, or experimentation frameworks
- Proficiency in performance-oriented programming languages such as C++, Java, or Go
- Experience leading cross-functional projects, mentoring engineers, or establishing technical roadmaps
