Job Description
Remotebase is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to handle backend services and manage the application production environment remotely. This position suits an experienced developer who can ensure the reliable operation of databases, APIs, background jobs, and integrations while helping the team ship changes safely. The tech stack includes TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js server components and route handlers, oRPC, Zod, PostgreSQL, Prisma, and Better Auth, with infrastructure running on Google Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, and Cloud Tasks.
The person in this role will take charge of production operations, feature flags, performance troubleshooting, and runtime configuration. Daily duties involve developing APIs, managing database queries inside a monorepo, validating database migrations, and maintaining integrations for email, storage, AI, payments, and electronic signatures. Additional focus areas include enforcing permissions, leading incident remediation alongside DevOps, writing comprehensive tests, reviewing code, mentoring peers, and keeping architectural documentation up to date.
Responsibilities
- Manage production application operations such as runtime configuration, feature flags, health checks, and performance troubleshooting
- Develop and maintain APIs, database queries, and shared business logic within a monorepo architecture
- Plan and validate database migrations while handling data recovery procedures and data integrity issues
- Maintain storage, payment, AI, email, and electronic signature integrations, covering webhooks, reconciliation, and retries
- Enforce role permissions, protect sensitive records, and maintain audit coverage for privileged actions
- Lead incident diagnosis and recovery efforts while collaborating with DevOps on infrastructure and release readiness
- Write unit, integration, API, and authorization tests, review code, and mentor fellow engineers
- Keep operational runbooks and architectural documentation accurate and up to date
Requirements
- Approximately six years of backend engineering experience or equivalent demonstrated expertise
- Strong practical production experience with Node.js, TypeScript, API design, and PostgreSQL
- Experience operating SaaS applications, troubleshooting incidents, and enhancing reliability
- Sound decision-making regarding concurrency, transactions, schema migrations, idempotency, and data recovery
- Background in multi-tenant systems, authentication, authorization, and secure handling of sensitive information
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform or similar managed cloud infrastructure
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Prisma or Drizzle
- Experience with oRPC and Better Auth
- Knowledge of Stripe Connect
- Exposure to background task queues and AI integrations
- Familiarity with Turborepo and pnpm monorepos
