Gusto seeks a Senior Product Manager, Tax Payments and Filing to join its team in San Francisco on a hybrid schedule. Gusto operates a platform that delivers payroll, health insurance, retirement plans, and HR services to support over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. In this role, the product manager will lead the investment strategy, tooling development, automation, and AI-enabled systems for tax compliance, managing the flow of billions of dollars to federal, state, and local agencies.
This position involves close collaboration with engineering, design, legal, customer experience, compliance, and internal operations teams to build scalable solutions that handle regulatory changes efficiently. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, possesses deep technical fluency, and brings experience working within regulated or compliance-driven domains. Responsibilities
- Define the long-term direction and investment strategy for tax compliance leverage and capabilities
- Partner with engineering, design, operations, compliance, legal, and customer experience teams to build aligned solutions
- Build prototypes, work directly with technical details, and deploy AI-driven automated systems
- Identify friction points and make prioritization tradeoffs based on structured frameworks
- Own outcomes end-to-end to ensure customer taxes are handled accurately and punctually
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on product management experience
- Prior experience owning internal-facing platforms, operational systems, or tooling
- Proven track record of driving leverage through system improvements, tooling, or automation
- Strong technical fluency and experience partnering with engineering teams in complex codebases
- Experience working in a regulated or compliance-driven industry such as financial services, banking, insurance, tax, healthcare, or benefits
- Hands-on background utilizing AI and automation
- Ability to use data to establish goals, measure impact, and identify leverage opportunities
