Gusto is currently seeking a Senior Revenue Accountant to join the team in San Francisco on a hybrid schedule. This full-time position suits an experienced financial professional interested in modernizing accounting practices through automation and artificial intelligence.
In this role, the selected candidate takes ownership of the complete revenue recognition lifecycle for the Gusto Retirement segment while providing support for emerging product lines. Responsibilities include managing accounting operations in compliance with ASC 606, performing reconciliations, and collaborating across departments to maintain financial accuracy. The individual will actively build automated solutions to eliminate repetitive tasks and streamline the financial close cycle. Team members at Gusto are expected to engage with relevant artificial intelligence tools in their daily work.
Responsibilities
- Manage the entire revenue recognition process for the Gusto Retirement division covering 401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, and plan administration
- Generate monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supplementary schedules related to retirement revenue
- Complete month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close procedures on schedule
- Interpret and apply ASC 606 standards to complicated agreements involving contract modifications, variable consideration, and principal versus agent determinations
- Develop and sustain automated fixes using Excel scripting, Python, SQL, or artificial intelligence applications
- Discover and deploy process enhancements to shorten cycle times and improve accuracy during the revenue close
- Assist external auditors during yearly audits by managing walkthroughs, supplying documentation, and answering questions
- Work alongside Data, Engineering, FP&A, and Retirement Operations teams regarding revenue data quality and new product releases
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of accounting experience
- At least three years of direct focus on revenue accounting
- Solid working knowledge of ASC 606 principles applied to subscription, SaaS, or fee-based models
- Demonstrated history of creating automation workflows, tools, or scripts that minimized manual effort
- Advanced proficiency in Excel
- Availability to work from the San Francisco office approximately two to three days per week
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Accounting
- Certified Public Accountant designation, either active or currently in progress
- Familiarity with Python or SQL
- Experience utilizing NetSuite or dedicated revenue subledgers
- Background working in public accounting or a Big 4 firm
- Previous exposure to fintech or financial services sectors
