Job Description
Upbound is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Spaces team and help develop and operate Upbound Spaces, the multi-control-plane management software at the core of the Upbound Platform. The company builds infrastructure platforms tailored for the Agentic AI Era and acts as the creator and primary maintainer of Crossplane. In this position, the engineer will focus on scaling the platform to reliably support numerous control planes while expanding enterprise control plane management features both in the cloud and on premises. The ideal candidate enjoys working in production environments, tackling distributed systems challenges, and collaborating directly with customers to resolve complex technical hurdles. The role suits a professional who wants to take ownership of service reliability, contribute to open-source initiatives, and influence the full lifecycle of cloud-based services.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate Upbound Spaces in production by managing multi-tenant SaaS environments and contributing to open-source projects like Crossplane
- Develop customer-driven features and deliver new functionality
- Investigate and debug intricate issues regarding customer environments, resource reconciliation, and performance
- Draft design documents for new initiatives and author post-incident reviews
- Support the full project lifecycle for cloud services from discovery and architecture to deployment and ongoing support
- Write and maintain Go code that interacts with the Kubernetes API including operators, controllers, and add-ons
- Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot Kubernetes production services utilizing metrics, logs, and traces
- Create operational tooling to analyze control plane health and automate incident response
- Produce documentation, user guides, runbooks, and blog posts
- Support the release cycle of self-hosted Spaces distributions and assist with customer-managed deployments
- Participate in an on-call rotation to support Upbound Cloud and drive incident resolution
Requirements
- Experience operating production cloud services at scale encompassing monitoring, alerting, incident response, and post-mortems
- Debugging expertise across distributed systems utilizing observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and distributed tracing
- Experience building and operating controllers that interact with the Kubernetes API server
- Ability to work directly with customers to diagnose and resolve technical issues
- Experience writing and maintaining Go code for the Kubernetes API
