Job Description
Affirm operates a financial network offering predictable payment options for consumers without hidden fees or surprises. The engineering organization builds fault-tolerant, large-scale global infrastructure utilized by various financial products and merchants. Within this organization, the AI Platform team manages the path for creating, operating, testing, and governing artificial intelligence systems for internal engineering customers and production workloads.
As a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (AI Platform), you will manage technical decisions and projects across the lifecycle from design through production launch and ongoing support. This remote-first role focuses on engineering the gateways, runtimes, and evaluation mechanisms required to scale AI workloads safely across millions of users and transactions. You will establish cost controls, identity frameworks, routing policies, and caching layers so engineering teams can adopt new models and tools efficiently. The position also involves leveraging agentic workflows and AI tools daily, monitoring system health through alerts and runbooks, and mentoring team members on engineering standards.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute technical projects for the AI Platform team from initial design through deployment and on-call maintenance.
- Build gateway, runtime, and evaluation services to scale AI workloads securely for millions of users.
- Implement identity, quota, routing, caching, and failover controls for AI cost attribution and governance.
- Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and product teams to establish guardrails and identity models for agentic workloads.
- Monitor system health by creating metrics, alerts, and operational runbooks while managing on-call duties.
- Advocate for code review and design standards through technical documentation and internal talks.
- Utilize AI tools and agentic workflows daily to accelerate code delivery, design reviews, and operational tasks.
- Mentor and guide engineers on coding practices, testing, and system design.
Requirements
- Four or more years of backend engineering experience designing, building, and launching large-scale systems using Kotlin or Python.
- Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as Kubernetes, AWS, and MySQL.
- Practical production experience building with large language models, agents, or AI frameworks including inference APIs, LLM gateways, Model Context Protocol, tool calling, and evaluation runtimes.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, maintainable code and make safe, large-scale changes within a major codebase.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration within a global engineering organization.
Qualifications
- Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor degree in a related technical discipline.
