Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (AI Platform) to join its remote engineering team. Affirm builds global, fault-tolerant financial infrastructure designed to provide transparent payment solutions to consumers and merchants without hidden fees. The AI Platform group is responsible for creating governed, scalable pathways for running artificial intelligence systems across the organization, serving both internal engineering teams and production workloads.
In this position, you will take ownership of technical projects ranging from initial architecture design to production launch and ongoing support. Your daily work involves developing core services such as the LLM Gateway, the MCP Gateway, and agent execution runtimes, helping transition AI initiatives from pilot phases to secure, large-scale production environments. You will implement critical cost attribution, quota management, caching, and failover capabilities, while partnering closely with security and infrastructure teams to establish proper guardrails. Additionally, you will utilize AI tools in your everyday workflows, help set code review benchmarks, and mentor other engineers on the team.
This is a full-time, remote role open exclusively to individuals living in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan. The annual base salary ranges from CAD 153,000 to 213,000, complemented by equity rewards, monthly health, wellness, and tech stipends, and fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents.
Responsibilities
- Plan, execute, and manage technical decisions and projects within the AI Platform group from design through deployment and on-call rotations
- Design and build gateway, runtime, and evaluation services to scale AI workloads safely across millions of users and transactions
- Establish identity, quota, routing, caching, and failover controls to make AI spending attributable and governable
- Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and product engineering teams to set guardrails and on-behalf-of identity models for agentic tool access
- Create and monitor operational metrics, alerts, runbooks, and system health for owned infrastructure
- Define and promote code review and design standards within and beyond the team
- Incorporate AI tools and agentic workflows into daily coding, design reviews, and operational duties
- Educate, mentor, and support the professional growth of fellow engineers
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching large-scale backend systems using languages such as Python or Kotlin
- Track record of building highly available distributed systems with technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Practical background building production applications with LLMs, agents, or AI frameworks, including inference APIs, LLM gateways, Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool calling, evaluations, or agent runtimes
- Ability to define comprehensive technical plans for delivering significant features or system components with clean, extensible designs
- Proficiency in making safe, impactful code modifications within a large codebase
- Residency in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan
