Coinbase seeks a Senior Software Engineer for its Data Engineering Platform team to help increase economic freedom globally. This remote-first position operates in an intense environment where staff assemble periodically for quarterly in-person sessions known as surges. The Data Platform group operates the infrastructure that centralizes internal and external data, supplying analytics, machine learning, and consumer applications.
This engineering position acts as a bridge between the platform infrastructure and the data scientists, analysts, and engineers relying on it daily. Professionals in this position develop software development kits, self-service applications, and abstractions enabling numerous pipelines and analytics workflows to operate smoothly without requiring users to manage underlying plumbing. Suited for experienced backend practitioners, the position involves designing data integration systems, building security and observability tools, and collaborating with upstream and downstream teams to deliver scalable data patterns.

Responsibilities
- Design software abstractions and modular components to support scaling across thousands of data pipelines
- Develop and maintain data integration and processing SDKs utilized by internal teams and services
- Create self-service applications allowing analysts and data scientists to manage and troubleshoot pipelines independently
- Build tools for data security, access controls, quality tracking, dataset cataloging, lineage, and usage auditing
- Consult with upstream teams on database structuring and provide downstream data scientists with well-designed models and metrics
- Transform functional requests from data analytics, machine learning, and compliance into reusable patterns
Requirements
- Have at least seven years of professional experience
- Demonstrate strong backend development skills in Python or Java
- Show fluency in SQL for ETL and ELT operations, data quality checks, and analysis
- Possess hands-on experience working with Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable platforms
- Hold general experience with data systems and data pipelines
- Display working knowledge of Linux, Git, and Docker
Qualifications
