Job Description

Coinbase seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join the Access & Authorization team inside its Platform division on a full-time, remote basis. Coinbase focuses on increasing economic freedom and operates in an environment that requires adherence to high technical standards, including periodic mandatory in-person working gatherings referred to as surges. This role centres on creating and managing secure access features that protect Coinbase users while supporting various partner integrations and company products.

This position fits professionals who have extensive experience building scalable distributed systems and managing identity or authentication architectures. The person selected will handle core infrastructure challenges involving multi-factor authentication, account recovery, tokens, and authorization edge services. Daily responsibilities involve collaborating closely with internal security, fraud, product, and infrastructure groups to balance strict regulatory requirements against user experience and system performance.

The role requires deep backend programming expertise, particularly in Go or equivalent systems-oriented languages, alongside strong knowledge of modern API security standards. Engineers in this position will take charge of complex projects from initial technical scoping through production deployment, help simplify onboarding pathways for internal product teams, and guide junior staff through peer code reviews, architectural feedback, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the complete lifecycle for authentication, OAuth, session handling, token management, two-factor authentication, account recovery, and edge authorization features.
  • Develop reliable, low-latency services using Go and gRPC to support web, mobile, API, and partner channels.
  • Spearhead technical architectures for complex updates including passkeys, biometric recovery, signed authorization tokens, and device-aware security logic.
  • Coordinate with product, infrastructure, security, and fraud departments to align engineering constraints with business and regulatory goals.
  • Design and maintain self-service developer tools to streamline the adoption of authorization capabilities across internal product teams.
  • Support engineering excellence by conducting design reviews, writing code, pairing with colleagues, participating in rotation schedules, and mentoring team members.

Requirements

  • At least five years of backend software engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in Go or another systems-oriented programming language for building production distributed systems.
  • Expertise in designing secure APIs and managing identity concepts including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JSON Web Tokens, and PKCE.
  • Experience working with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, Redis, or DynamoDB.
  • Demonstrated ability to track service health using logs, metrics, traces, alerts, and service-level objectives.
  • Track record of leading cross-functional technical projects from design to deployment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to responsibly apply generative AI tools to maintain human oversight, improve workflow efficiency, and manage cost and quality.
