Coinbase seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer for its Institutional Exchange team to shape the architecture of platforms facilitating high-volume financial trading. Operating on a remote-first basis with periodic in-person working sessions known as surges, the company builds systems that enable large financial institutions to trade across markets with speed and trust.
This role suits an experienced engineer who thrives in an intense environment and wants to drive technical strategy for core exchange domains, including matching engines, order management, market data, and risk systems. The position requires setting the technical direction across multiple teams, ensuring high availability and resilience for 24/7 markets while maintaining hands-on coding contributions.
The successful candidate will lead the design of ultra-low-latency, event-sourced platforms, mentor senior personnel, and guide architectural choices spanning cloud and colocated infrastructures.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical strategy and architecture for a core Exchange domain through multi-quarter initiatives
- Lead the design of ultra-low-latency, event-sourced trading systems across cloud and colocated environments
- Drive cross-team technical alignment across Exchange, Prime, and Derivatives teams
- Set and inspect the quality bar for deterministic testing, failover design, incident leadership, and operational standards
- Maintain hands-on coding contributions while guiding execution through senior engineers and tech leads
- Mentor L5-L6 engineers to help build future technical leadership
Requirements
- Over 10 years of software engineering experience with ownership of production trading, exchange, or market-data systems
- Deep expertise in low-latency distributed systems
- Proficiency in a backend language such as Java, C++, or Go with fluency in JVM and Linux performance tuning
- Demonstrated architectural ownership of an end-to-end trading platform including order management, multi-venue connectivity, and real-time risk
- Experience operating latency-sensitive systems in on-premises, colocated, and cloud environments
- Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly with human oversight
