Coinbase is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Native Mobile to serve within the Consumer & Business group's App Infra team. The company aims to increase economic freedom through an intense and demanding work environment. Coinbase operates on a remote-first model, though employees gather periodically for quarterly in-person sessions known as surges. This role acts as a technical architect leading a major platform shift to replace the existing React Native application with native Kotlin and Swift builds intended to serve millions of users.
The person in this position will spearhead an AI-assisted migration strategy utilizing agentic translation at scale. Responsibilities include designing a paved-road native framework so individual contributors can work across both Android and iOS codebases simultaneously, while partnering closely with design, product, and engineering leadership. Candidates must possess substantial professional experience in native mobile development, a history of managing complex platform rewrites, deep performance optimization knowledge, and familiarity with AI-native engineering workflows.
Responsibilities
- Establish the technical roadmap for transitioning the mobile platform to native technologies
- Design AI-assisted migration frameworks including automated synchronization and agent swarms
- Build a standardized native framework in Swift and Kotlin for cross-platform contributor productivity
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and design leadership to clear roadblocks and guide technical direction
- Coach L5 and L6 engineers and cultivate the technical leadership pipeline for mobile engineering
- Foster connections and establish best practices across the entire mobile engineering community
Requirements
- Have twelve or more years of software engineering experience
- Demonstrate deep expertise in either Android or iOS native mobile development with strong working proficiency in the alternate platform
- Show a proven track record of owning outcomes and driving multi-phase platform migrations or rewrites across multiple teams
- Bring deep performance optimization expertise covering device-tier profiling, frame stability, cold start optimization, and scroll jank elimination
- Exhibit strong influence without authority to alter technical directions and align leadership on high-stakes choices
- Possess experience creating AI-native engineering workflows such as agent-based automation and LLM-driven code generation
