Job Description

Canonical is seeking a Python engineer for its container images group. The group is creating a new set of Ubuntu-based container images that anyone can use at no cost, backed by long-term security support and tuned for speed, safety and ease of use. Development happens in public and welcomes outside contributors. The position is in the EMEA region, and the engineer works from home.

The engineer would expand and maintain a growing set of container images, collaborating with teams inside and outside Canonical so quality stays high and Ubuntu feels consistent. A large share of the work is designing and running the CI/CD pipelines that build and ship these images. The group also maintains Rocks, which are OCI-compliant images. Seniority depends on software background and the ability to guide junior engineers, and the role includes mentoring and recruiting help.

Responsibilities span writing tooling and tests that verify security posture and compatibility with cloud-native platforms, taking part in code and architecture reviews, improving the Python and Go build tools, and giving technical input to team decisions. The engineer would also write documentation and serve as an expert voice in open source communities. Global travel for internal and external events can reach 15 percent.

Responsibilities

  • Build and upkeep robust, scalable container images
  • Own automated pipelines that build, test and publish the images
  • Build checks that test container security posture and cloud-native fit
  • Join code and architecture reviews that uphold engineering standards
  • Improve the Python and Go container-building tools, both using them and developing them
  • Write documentation, coach colleagues and help with hiring

Requirements

  • Solid software development skills and a history of shipping high-quality work on schedule
  • Hands-on work with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions or Concourse CI
  • Understanding of GitOps practices and workflows
  • Experience making container images and using a container platform such as Docker or Kubernetes
  • Python skills plus Linux administration and package management
  • Clear written and spoken communication of technical ideas

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or comparable qualification in computer science, a STEM subject or a similar field
  • Track record working in collaborative, agile and globally spread teams
  • Belief in openly sharing knowledge and contributing to community projects

Core Skills

Benefits

  • USD 2,000 per year personal learning and development budget
  • Bonus or commission linked to results each year
  • Annual compensation review and recognition rewards
  • Twice-yearly team sprints held in person
  • Holiday leave and parental leave for every parent
  • Team Member Assistance Program and wellness platform
  • Lounge access and travel upgrades on long-haul company trips
