Job Description
Canonical wants a Staff Design Engineer who can shape how people experience its cloud networking products. This is a design-team position answering to the Infrastructure design manager, with scope that reaches across the company. The goal is to turn dense networking infrastructure into something developers and operations staff can understand and run with confidence.
The post centres on setting the UX direction for networking across the cloud range, which includes MAAS, MicroCloud and Ubuntu Server networking. Designing will involve network topology views, configuration screens and tools that keep large fleets manageable. Concepts that need careful treatment include VPCs, subnet layouts, route tables, firewall-style security groups, load balancer setup and network observability. Some users prefer graphical tools while others work in a terminal, so the role covers both.
The profile is a senior product or interaction designer with a strong B2B or enterprise portfolio, a working grasp of cloud and networking basics, and experience designing for engineers who run systems. Good information architecture, research skills, and the ability to justify design decisions to engineers and to non-specialists are needed. The position also involves mentoring designers, building design systems that span several products, and leading a cross-team working group.
Canonical builds the Ubuntu platform and counts large public cloud and chip vendors among its customers. Its workforce is spread across many countries and has been remote since 2004. This particular role is remote within the EMEA region.
