Job Description
This full-time, remote Usability Engineer role sits in the Design team and supports User Science, a newer design discipline at Canonical, a company that publishes Ubuntu. The team looks beyond traditional user research by bringing user needs into development processes and quality benchmarks across the company. The job is remote within the EMEA region.
The engineer collects and synthesizes user data, builds insights in several formats, and reviews findings from split tests, usability studies and other methods. The work includes making quick prototypes, dashboards or automation scripts so that research can be used more widely. The engineer calibrates research presentations to suit each stakeholder in a highly technical setting.
Other responsibilities include partnering with process, product and engineering groups so that research feeds into existing decisions, strengthening research operations so that methods are more accessible and repeatable, and contributing to user-centered training and resources that help grow the User Science discipline.
The posting seeks an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a neighboring subject such as design, engineering or data science, or a clearly explained alternative path, plus proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods. A hands-on, tinkering mindset, a degree of technical fluency, a focus on systematizing best practices, and a robust portfolio are expected. Linux, container technology, Python-based data analysis and open-source contributions are nice to have.
